I created the drum kit after noticing that at live events the entire focus of the room is directed towards the DJ. The stage acts almost like a throne, with audiences positioned as spectators looking forward, while lighting operators and 'VJs' (visual jockeys; responsible for operation of live visuals) work unnoticed from the back of the room. Yet these operators contribute just as much to the energy of the show.
By using a drum kit to control lighting and visuals, I wanted to make the hidden creative role of live lighting and visuals control visible and performative, transforming it into something audiences could watch and engage with.
What began as a small installation in a basement pub evolved into a club-based experience and is now being developed into an accessible system for clubs and festivals. By allowing attendees to directly control lighting and visuals through drumming, the project shifts some creative agency back into the crowd, creating a more reciprocal relationship between performer and audience.
Rather than concentrating all attention at the front of the room, it attempts to open up new points of participation and encourages a more shared experience of live events.
